About 10 years ago, a famous Major League slugger was walking out of a stadium after a game. His long-ball-hitting capabilities as well as his physical size were huge. He also happened to be very good-natured. He was approached for autographs, and was, as usual, very willing to spend a little time to make some kids happy. There were two problems, though. The first was that “approached” was actually far from the accurate word. “Stampede,” unfortunately, was the correct one. The second problem was that this star was walking out of a stadium used by a team whose owners spent a relative pittance on off-the-field protection, namely crowd control
interlocking barriers. The result was that about 30 people, mostly youngsters running fast, knocked the slugger flat on his back onto concrete. Some of the kids fell on top of him.
Luckily, neither he nor the autograph seekers who fell were unhurt. But predictably the autographing ended before it had a chance to begin. The player gut up, walked to his car an unhappy man, and drove off.
What was he thinking as he pulled out of the parking lot? For one thing, he not doubt was upset at how potentially dangerous crowds, even those made up of youngsters, can be.
The second thing that may well have crossed his mind was that he wished he’d been walking out of one of the stadiums at which
crowd control barriers are used to protect players as well as fans.
Outside these stadiums, he’s used to walking into an enthusiastic, yet very safe and controlled environment. The
crowd control barriers are usually interlocked into the position of an open-sided rectangle. He can walk up to the fans, sign autographs, shake hands with them, and chat with them. The
crowd control barriers keep the fans, sometimes numbering in the hundreds right after games, from pressing against him, much less knocking him down. They also keep the fans from stampeding and possibly harming each other.
When the signing and talking are over, the player leaves, pleased with gaining some extra recognition for his skills and hard work. All fans leave with that neat little thrill of having stood very close to and even spoken with a famous person. And a portion of the fans leave with a free souvenir – the autograph.
These
interlocking barriers have many uses at a number of venues besides stadiums. In each place, they are the key to safety and orderliness at venues or events that draw crowds. They can be set up to allow people to move in single-file lines, which are almost always the most efficient and safest manner in which to enter a crowded venue.
The crowd control barriers also keep people from unintentionally approaching dangerous areas. Take any city’s downtown area at lunchtime, for example. Part of an intersection is being ripped up by a work crew for repair. Temporarily, part of the asphalt is a dangerous pit. Nearly all people will notice the work crew and veer away without needing to be physically protected from the large hole in the street. But those in charge of the work can’t count on 100 percent of the passers-by to stay clear. A few people may well be distracted or otherwise inattentive. A few young children possibly could be around. This type of
safety fence will block them from approaching the pit no matter how preoccupied or inattentive they may be, protecting them from harm.
The best crowd control barriers are constructed of galvanized, heavy-duty steel and are painted safety yellow for highest visibility. They are light enough to be easily moved when an event is over or the work is done and the crowds have gone. The interlocking aspect of this
safety railing is vital so that no one can squeeze between the individual barrier
gates and possibly expose themselves to hazards.
Anywhere there are large amounts of people in an outside area, this type of
crowd control fence is vital. At minimum function, they ensure orderliness. At maximum function, these
railings prevent injury and even save lives. If you are organizing events or in control of venues that attract crowds, this kind of
safety fencing is indispensable. They also are easy to obtain and will last for many, many years.
They are not an item to be considered or debated for use. They are an absolute necessity.
