Shipping clearly is a vital aspect of any business that produces goods as opposed to providing services. Shipping timetables are extremely important because many products are seasonal and others, for a variety of reasons, have a limited shelf life. What will sell at stores today may be in considerably less demand six months from now. With globalization of commerce now a multi-trillion-dollar reality, many products must travel considerably farther to the marketplace than they had to 20 years ago. This relatively new worldwide marketplace demands that businesses meet tight production deadlines and shipping schedules. High-quality product shipping has three aspects: transporting the items in a fast and yet economical manner, shipping the proper items in the agreed-to quantities to the right destinations, and ensuring that these products arrive at their destination in excellent condition. Products arriving at the marketplace in damaged condition translate immediately into lost revenue.

There are a variety of excellent products designed to help ensure that goods arrive at their destination in undamaged condition. A good deal of this material handling and packaging equipment is designed to secure products firmly in place during transit, preventing movement and banging around that can cause damage. This packing equipment includes manual strapping machines, which place polyester strapping through and around a pallet, holding the products on top of the pallet firmly in place during shipping. Also highly effective are truck mounted strap winches, which are designed to tighten down loads on flatbed trucks. These winches are designed to work with lifting bars, which are used to ratchet the polyester strapping to a tight grip on the load. Another commonly used, highly efficient type of industrial strapping is steel strapping.

Another highly efficient type of industrial packaging equipment is the semi-automatic strapping machine. These machines dispense, tighten, and seal polypropylene strapping around loads, keeping these products from moving around during transit. Most top models of semi-automatic strapping machines are portable, allowing them to quickly be moved from one facility location to another where there’s product-strapping work to be done. The polypropylene strapping used by these machines is especially effective because it protects products by absorbing shock during truck loading and unloading. Additionally, two small but very efficient pieces of shipping-related equipment are edge protectors and pallet pullers. Edge protectors are placed on the bottom corners of palletized loads and work to stabilize the loads and protect boxes from damage that can be caused by strap cutting.

In additional to the various types of strapping, another often-used and highly effective type of protective shipping material is stretch wrap. A type of plastic wrapping that is highly durable, stretch wrap is very resistant to puncturing and is designed to not allow water to penetrate it. Stretch wrap both organizes and protects products that have been loaded onto pallets and is efficient with conventionally sized as well as oddly sized loads. It seals the loads to the pallets, helping to prevent product movement during shipping. In addition, stretch wrap helps to keep dust and moisture away from products.
